The shape of Italy is famously similar to a thigh-high boot, with Salento as its 12-inch heel… Aptly enough, this narrow sub-peninsula is considered one of the most desirable tourist destinations by Italians themselves. Just where the tip of the heel dips into the Mediterranean Sea, we find Ugento, ideal home to windswept vineyards, olive groves and vegetable crops, charmingly located between the sandy beaches and the inland, red-soil hills. One hundred and seventy-eight acres of Ugento land make up the heart and soul of this Salento gem, tellingly named I Contadini – which translates as The Farmers.

What’s in a name? A great deal, since the estate’s owners, siblings Edoardo, Emanuele & Gianna Trentin, have chosen to highlight the family’s farming roots, honoring Nonno Fiumano and neglecting to follow in their own parents’ footsteps in the world of fashion – preferring to expand Fiumano’s original homestead and devote every ounce of their energy and enthusiasm to the land.

INTEGRATED FARMING FOR A TIMELESS HERITAGE

Today, beside the award-winning, autochthonous Racale variety of capers (Gambero Rosso “Best of Italy” for 2020), the siblings and their expert local team estate-grow Salento herbs, olives and vegetables, handcrafting them into the purest, most artisanal preserves, sauces, sun-dried tomatoes, tomato purées etc., as well as selecting the finest local durum wheat strains that go into their short-chain Apulian pastas and bakery products.

The team is made up of 90% women and 100% salentino, injecting fundamental resources into the local economy while maintaining the terroir and environment pristine and natural. Methods are wholly manual and eco-friendly, the entire range is free of artificial preservatives and only the freshest, most seasonal and wholesome produce winds up in an I Contadini jar – so perfect to taste and even look at, the siblings dress it in a transparent label that showcases the glowing, healthy colors and textures of Mother Nature.
